Freeplay is hosting a two-day conference at ACMI. We explore the intersections where games and play collide with other artforms, creative disciplines and cultural conversations. Hear from Australia’s leading and emerging independent game makers as they discuss their craft and reflect on their culture across a number of panels and formats. The conference will be home to our international keynote guests Auriea Harvey & Michaël Samyn, and Zuraida Buter. Ticket includes both conference days (Saturday 26 & Sunday 27 May) and the Awards Ceremony on Sunday 27 May.

ACMI Conversations: The Pleasure of Pixels

Video games can transport players into ethereal experiences, create unique communities and become a medium for interactive and experimental art. Join game designer and curator Chad Toprak (Freeplay), experimental games designers Auriea Harvey & Michaël Samyn (Tale of Tales) and cultural curator Zuraida Buter (Zo-ii) for a deep dive into beautiful, wonderous and experiential game worlds.

We have some exciting 2-hour workshops at Freeplay this year, from theatre to zine making, to twine games, to alt control design. No prior knowledge is required. Some session may require you to bring your own laptop. Purchase your tickets before they run out!

Screening — Branching Paths

Branching Paths depicts a new world woven together by Japanese indie game developers, publishers and many more. It explores not only the struggles of artistic expression, but also the conflicts indie developers face gambling their own survival in pursuit of their dreams.

Proudly Kickstarted and presented by Way Down Deep, The CheckPoint Series is here to improve wellbeing, boost resilience, and teach how games can be used for good. CheckPoint is a non profit organisation that connects mental health resources with video games. CheckPoint believes games can help recovery, and even be therapeutic. Their mission is to support the people who play and make games, and to use games for good.

Boardgames Up Late

Welcome, dear prisoners, to GAMESHOW! Negotiate, weasel, and backstab your way to freedom in this live game by PlayReactive. PlayReactive is a play-making collective based in Melbourne, Australia who create bold interactive experiences, from videogames to installation art.

Freeplay and Hovergarden team up once again to present a magical night full of videogames, installation art, live music, drinks, food, an artists market, and more! Come and see the Hovercade Collection 2K18, a series of original work by local artists commission just for this event! Joining us will be a collection of artwork selected by special guest Kati Elizabeth.
